Buddhist monks attack on Rohingyas in Sri Lanka

Extremist Buddhists have attacked the Rohingya who took shelter in a UN safe house in Sri Lanka. The incident happened in the capital Colombo on Tuesday, police said. After this incident, 31 Rohingya refugees who were in the safe house have been forced to move away elsewhere.


Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said that Rohingyas, who came to Sri Lanka with the help of two Indian human traffickers, crossed the sea in April. Later they were kept in a detention center of the police.
Sinhalese Jatiya Balamuwa, a radical nationalist group, has been shown live broadcast on their Facebook page, Buddhist monks and some civilians have attacked the safe house. In the meantime, they shouted slogans, 'terrorists are not sheltering in this country.'

A Buddhist monk, led by the attacker Akimana Dayaratne, said that the Rohingyas are terrorists. They killed our Buddhist monks in Myanmar. '

A police officer unwilling to disclose the name said, "We have removed the attackers and arrangements have been made to protect Rohingya."

AFP reported that local authorities later handed over the Rohingya UNHCR to UNHCR officials.
